An MPhil in Biotechnology equips graduates with exceptional skills in critical thinking,

i. Academic and Research Institutions

Graduates can pursue positions as lecturers or researchers at universities. They may also work as research scientists or fellows in national research councils and biotechnology research

institutions. Project-based roles focusing on infectious disease, genomics, environmental or agricultural research are often available through grant-funded international partnerships.

These positions provide a pathway to PhD programs and senior academic positions.

ii. Government and Public Sector

The public sector offers opportunities as research scientists or specialists within ministries of agriculture, health, or science and technology, where graduates can take on regulatory roles in biosafety, GMO approvals, or work in national laboratories. Positions are also available in public health institutes focusing on diagnostics, vaccine development, agriculture or

In agricultural biotech, graduates can work in seed companies, agro-processing firms, or in the development of bio-fertilizers and pesticides with a focus on plant and animal biotech.

The food science and biotech sector offers positions as technologists, quality analysts, or in research and development within food processing industries, particularly common in Sub-

Saharan Africa. Pharmaceutical and health biotech companies provide lab roles in diagnostics, bioprocessing, or emerging local manufacturing, such as monoclonal antibody

production through partnerships. Biotech startups and companies focused on health and agriculture offer opportunities in research, product development, or operations, as these firms

increasingly attract investment across Africa. Technical sales or marketing positions with lab equipment and diagnostics firms operating nationally and regionally are also available.

iv. International Organizations, NGOs, and Fellowships

Graduates can pursue research and project roles with international bodies like the WHO, African Development Bank initiatives, or consortia addressing regional challenges.

Fellowship opportunities exist for mid-career researchers in infectious diseases or programs at BioNTech and international laboratories. Consulting or innovation roles in bioeconomy

projects provide additional pathways for career development.
