Founding and Growth
Lupane State University was established in 2004 through an Act of Parliament, specifically the Lupane State University Act [Chapter 25:25].
Initially, the University welcomed its first cohort of 12 students into the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, which has since become the flagship faculty. This focus on agriculture in semi-arid regions has contributed significantly to the University's growth.

Lupane State University has taken heed of the Ministry’s clarion call to embrace
Heritage-based Education, with a focus on the production of goods and services
that solve societal challenges, and producing graduates with hands-on practical
experience, ready to transform industry through their expertise. To this end, the
University has made deliberate efforts to create spaces where innovation and
industrialisation among both students and staff can thrive. The University has
thus established a Dryland Agro-Innovation and Industrial Park, where students
in the agricultural sciences programmes can have practicals in both crop
production and animal husbandry. The Bingwa Wildlife Ecotourism Innovation
and Industrial Park, the Lupane Waterfront Resort and Conference Centre, and
the International School of Tourism, Hospitality and Events are also other
initiatives to ensure that students in the Tourism and Hospitality programmes
have practical exposure before they are released into industry.
